Workshop on Coupled Adjoints

October 11 – October 13, 2022, Kaiserslautern, Germany

A Workshop of the National HPC Center South-West (NHR@SW)

coupledadjoints2022

The aim of this workshop is to offer the opportunity to present recent research results on adjoint methods for multi-disciplinary optimization problems, to discuss new approaches and to initiate research projects. Fields of application may include, but are not limited to, coupled multiphysics problems from computational fluid dynamics (e.g. fluid-structure interaction or conjugate heat transfer). For such problems, adjoint formulations require an accurate consideration of coupling terms between sets of adjoint equations or numerical adjoint solvers for which many algorithms have been developed in the past. They differ in their architecture which can be of monolithic nature or realized through external libraries, in using continuous or discrete formulations and in being purpose-built for specialized problem settings or designed with a focus on flexibility.

We invite researchers from the adjoint and optimization communities to share their ideas, software contributions and open problems, and we emphasize that not only success stories are welcome but also discussions on both hardware and software limitations as well as other difficulties.
